Plan your big move - Tips to save you time and efforts

Updated: Dec 7, 2022

You’ve found your new home, and now comes the part that we all dread the most, pacing things and moving. Moving is stressful but with the right organisation and timelines you can make it a little bit easier. At Agents of Real Estate, we are nothing if not accommodating to the needs of the people we interact with on a daily basis so, we've put together a list of things to do as you plan your big move.

Here are 12 helpful tips to get you through:

  1. Pack a bag containing all your everyday essentials. This will help you avoid trying to remember which box you packed your toothbrush in or where that fresh pair of underwear are hiding.

  2. Try your best to clean your new home BEFORE you bring everything over. This will help eliminate the chaos of multitasking. For example: wiping down the interiors of your new kitchen cupboards will allow you to immediately unpack your dishes and put them away as soon as you arrive

  3. Get rid of the junk! If you aren’t using it now, then chances are that you won’t be using it in your new home. It's always a good idea to donate or throw away the items that you no longer make use of

  4. Create a schedule - Break down the process into clean sections and stages. This will help organize your months leading up to the big day. Instead of trying to get everything done at once, populate the stages into a multitude of tasks that you can follow along over a period of weeks/months leading up to the big move

  5. Label your boxes before you start the packing process. This will avoid the inevitable guessing game of what goes where and save you a ton of time when you start unpacking

  6. Protect your fragile items! Wrap them in socks, old blankets, bubble wrap or newspaper

  7. Make copies of your important documents. You never know what gets misplaced

  8. Take pictures of how your electronics are connected, and label your wires so you don’t end up with big balls of wire that can only be used by your cat to play with. This will save you the stress of having to remember what cable goes where

  9. Limit cardboard boxes. Use laundry bins, luggage, knapsacks and bags to pack heavy items like books

  10. Don’t be afraid of numbering your boxes. This system will keep you from questioning if you left anything behind

  11. Remember to DEFROST your fridge a day before you move. This will help you to avoid a stinky mess

  12. Remember to stay hydrated and pack snacks for the ride, we know the once you move to the new house, you’re going to have a lot on your plate with unpacking and organizing your new life - Taking care of yourself and the people around you will go a long way!

Planning ahead and knowing what you need to do is the first step to making peace with the moving process. At the end of the day, your ‘why’ should be more than enough reassurance that, despite what seems daunting, you’re making the right decision. We’re glad to help and can guide you through the process.
